Can NextGen Connect to Availity?
Last updated / Reviewed by Clunic Research Team
Quick answer
Yes. Availity names NextGen in its published list of existing practice management and EHR integrations, and NextGen and Availity have collaborated since 2013, including the 2019 NextGen Pre-Service Solutions launch. The integration moves eligibility, claim, remittance and authorization transactions between NextGen practice management and Availity's payer network. The free Essentials portal is separate from the integrated, paid tiers, and the difference matters.

Book an evaluation callCan NextGen connect to Availity?
Yes. Availity's existing integrations page, checked in September 2026, lists NextGen among the practice management and EHR systems its revenue cycle solution integrates with. The relationship is old by health IT standards: NextGen and Availity announced a collaborative care data sharing project with Florida Blue in 2013, and in February 2019 NextGen launched Pre-Service Solutions in collaboration with Availity to handle eligibility and financial clearance before the visit.
The question that brings most people here is narrower than it looks. Almost every practice on NextGen already uses Availity in some form, because Availity Essentials is the free multi payer portal that many health plans designate as their exclusive provider portal. That is not the same thing as an integration. The portal is a browser workflow that a front desk logs into. The integration is the set of electronic transactions that run from inside NextGen without anyone opening a second window. This page is about the second thing, and about knowing which one you are being sold.
Like Waystar, Availity does not appear in the NextGen API Marketplace list we checked. That list is for API applications on the NextGen Enterprise developer platform. Clearinghouse connectivity runs through the practice management EDI configuration and NextGen's partner programme, which is a different channel. The NextGen integration guide explains the difference between the developer tracks and the partner programme.
How is the Availity and NextGen integration built?
On standard EDI transactions, with Availity's APIs as the newer layer.
NextGen Enterprise practice management generates 270 eligibility requests, 837 claims and 276 status enquiries, and consumes 271, 277 and 835 responses. Availity's clearinghouse and trading partner network accepts those in X12 form and states that trading partners can also send eligibility through SOAP and RESTful APIs. Availity Essentials Pro, the paid tier, is described as including batch eligibility, pre claim eligibility and a real time eligibility service that integrates into the provider's EHR workflow. Where a practice has non standard flows, NextGen Connect, the interface engine formerly called Mirth, is where they usually live.
Prior authorization is where the architecture is changing fastest. Availity is both a provider side clearinghouse and a payer side platform, and its utilization management products sit on the payer side of the same network. Under the CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization rule, impacted payers must expose FHIR based prior authorization APIs on a published timetable, and Availity is one of the vendors building those for health plans. For a NextGen practice that means the authorization path may in time run over payer FHIR APIs rather than 278 transactions or portal screens, but what is live for a given payer today has to be checked payer by payer. The CMS prior authorization rule page has the dates.
None of this touches the clinical chart. FHIR R4 and SMART App Launch, which NextGen documents for certified clinical access, are not what a clearinghouse uses. That is also why an Availity deployment does not require the NextGen API Developer Program, and why the skills you need in house are EDI and NextGen Connect rather than app development.
What does Availity do inside the NextGen workflow?
It depends entirely on tier, and that is the sentence to remember.
| Availity offering | Cost as published | Inside NextGen? |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials portal | Free to providers | No, browser workflow; staff key data in and read results on screen |
| Essentials Pro and clearinghouse | Paid, on request | Yes, transactions run from NextGen practice management and results post back |
| APIs for trading partners | Paid, on request | Yes, for a practice or vendor building its own flows |
| Payer side utilization management | Sold to health plans | Indirectly; determines what your payers can accept electronically |
On the integrated tier, the useful behaviours are the ordinary ones: eligibility checked in batch before clinic and in real time at check in, claims scrubbed before submission, status and remittance posted back, and authorization requests submitted electronically where the payer supports it. The revenue cycle automation page describes what to measure when you turn each of these on.
What Availity does not publish is a field level statement of what posts into which NextGen fields. Not published. Checked September 2026. Ask for a demonstration on your NextGen build showing an eligibility response landing in the patient's insurance record without a human copying it, because that single behaviour is the practical difference between the portal and the integration.
What does your IT and compliance team have to approve?
- Business associate agreement. Availity processes protected health information for both providers and payers. Confirm the data uses permitted on the provider side, particularly for de identified analytics, and the retention period. The HIPAA and AI compliance page lists the questions.
- Payer enrolment. Every electronic connection needs enrolment, and this is what governs the timeline. Get a plan for your top payers with dates.
- Tier and contract. Confirm in writing which Availity tier you are on today, which you are moving to, and what changes in the NextGen workflow as a result.
- Configuration ownership. Name who owns the NextGen EDI setup and any NextGen Connect channels, and whether that person is an employee or a consultant with capacity.
- Portal access hygiene. If staff will still use Essentials for some payers, review shared logins and access reviews. Portal accounts are a common audit finding.
- Authorization automation oversight. Where any step is automated, agree who reviews outcomes and how failures are surfaced. Our CMS-0057 provider checklist covers the payer side of that.
What are the known gaps and open questions?
Pricing is the first and it is the question people search for most. Availity's free tier is genuinely free; everything that runs inside NextGen is paid, and the rates are not published. Not published. Checked September 2026. Ask for a per transaction or per provider schedule, what is bundled, and whether NextGen resells it or Availity contracts with you directly. Availity pricing covers what can be established before a quote.
The second is the boundary between portal and integration. Sales conversations blur it, and a practice can end up paying for Essentials Pro while staff keep working in the free portal out of habit. Set an adoption measure: the share of eligibility checks that ran electronically from NextGen versus by portal lookup.
The third is prior authorization depth. Availity's strongest authorization products sit on the payer side, and a NextGen practice benefits only where its payers have deployed them. Ask, payer by payer, which support electronic authorization submission and status today. The prior authorization software comparison shows how provider side vendors fill the gap where payers have not.
The fourth is that "existing integration" is a list entry, not a description. Ask Availity which NextGen product versions the integration is certified against, when it was last updated, and for two NextGen practices in your specialty using the integrated tier.
What should you ask before you sign?
- Which Availity tier are we on now, which are we buying, and what changes inside NextGen as a result?
- What are the rates by transaction type, the minimum commitment, and who bills us, NextGen or Availity?
- Which NextGen fields receive eligibility, claim status, remit and authorization results automatically?
- Which of our top twenty payers support electronic authorization submission and status through Availity today?
- How will payer FHIR prior authorization APIs under CMS-0057 reach our NextGen workflow, and when?
- Who owns NextGen EDI and Connect configuration during and after implementation?
- Can you name two NextGen practices in our specialty on the integrated tier, and may we call them?
For the authorization business case specifically, the prior auth cost calculator puts a number on what manual authorization work costs you today, and prior authorization automation explains how to pilot the alternative.
What does an independent review add?
Availity is unusual because it is already in your building. The decision is not whether to use it but which tier, for which transactions, against which alternative, and that is exactly the decision a vendor account manager is least able to frame neutrally. A NextGen practice comparing Availity's paid tiers with Waystar, with NextGen's own clearinghouse arrangements, or with a provider side authorization vendor needs the options priced against the same transaction mix.
Our vendor selection engagement does that, checks posting behaviour on your NextGen configuration, and verifies which of your payers actually support electronic authorization before anyone promises automation rates. If the question is broader, whether your revenue cycle team is ready for automation at all, the AI readiness audit baselines denial rates, days in A/R and authorization turnaround first. Questions we get asked
Does Availity integrate with NextGen?
Yes. Availity lists NextGen among its existing practice management and EHR integrations, and the two companies have collaborated since 2013, including NextGen's 2019 Pre-Service Solutions launch built with Availity. The integrated transactions run on the paid tiers; the free Essentials portal is a separate browser workflow.
Is Availity free for NextGen practices?
The Availity Essentials portal is free to providers and many payers designate it as their exclusive portal. Anything that runs inside NextGen without staff keying data, such as integrated real time eligibility or clearinghouse claims, sits on paid tiers with unpublished pricing. See Availity pricing for what to ask.
How does Availity compare with NextGen Ambient Assist?
They are unrelated. Ambient Assist is NextGen's AI scribe for clinical notes. Availity moves eligibility, claim and authorization data between your practice and payers. A NextGen practice can run both, and neither replaces the other. For the scribe question, read the ambient scribe use case.
Can Availity automate prior authorization from NextGen?
Partly, and it depends on your payers. Availity carries electronic authorization transactions where a payer supports them and is building payer side FHIR authorization APIs under the CMS rule. Where a payer has neither, the work still falls to staff or to a provider side automation vendor. Ask for a payer by payer answer. Denial management covers what to measure downstream.
Does Availity write anything into the NextGen chart?
Not into the clinical note. On the integrated tier, eligibility responses, claim status and remittances post to the practice management side of NextGen. Availity does not publish a field level map, so ask for a demonstration on your own build.
Why is Availity not in the NextGen API Marketplace?
The marketplace lists applications built on NextGen Enterprise APIs. Clearinghouse connectivity runs through practice management EDI configuration and NextGen's partner programme, so a listing is not expected. Availity's own existing integrations page is the relevant public record.
