Waystar and MEDITECH: An Alliance Partner for Claims, Eligibility and Denials
Last updated / Reviewed by Clunic Research Team
Quick answer
Yes. Waystar and MEDITECH announced a partnership in January 2024, Waystar is on the MEDITECH Alliance member roster, and Waystar publishes a MEDITECH integration page covering eligibility, estimates, claims, remits, denial recovery and analytics. This is a revenue cycle data flow, not a clinical one. Check which transactions post back into MEDITECH automatically, who owns the interfaces on your hosting model, and how AI driven features are governed.

Book an evaluation callDoes Waystar integrate with MEDITECH, and what kind of integration is it?
Yes, and it is a formal one. It is also a revenue cycle integration, so nothing on this page touches the clinical note.
Waystar and MEDITECH announced their partnership in January 2024, pairing Waystar's payments platform with the Expanse EHR. Waystar's MEDITECH integration page, checked in September 2026, describes Waystar as a MEDITECH Alliance partner and lists the product areas it connects: financial clearance (eligibility, real time authorisation, coverage detection), patient financial care (estimates, payments, charity screening), clinical integrity (DRG anomaly and charge integrity checks), claims management, denial recovery with AI prioritisation and appeal automation, and analytics. Waystar appears on the MEDITECH Alliance member roster, and its page cites Frederick Health and Permian Regional Medical Center as MEDITECH customers.
That is why Waystar sits in the native column on our MEDITECH integration guide. Alliance status on MEDITECH is a stronger signal than a marketplace listing elsewhere, because it maps to a working relationship with MEDITECH's own teams rather than a directory entry. For a community hospital, where the revenue cycle conversation is usually the one that started the AI conversation, that matters.
What Waystar's page does not do is state transaction by transaction which flows are automated in each direction, and it does not mention Expanse by name. Those are your first two questions.
How is the Waystar and MEDITECH integration built?
On interfaces between MEDITECH's billing and registration modules and Waystar's clearinghouse, mostly X12 and HL7, with the AI features running on Waystar's side of that line.
Claims leave MEDITECH as 837 files, remittances return as 835 files, eligibility runs as 270 and 271 transactions at registration or in batch, and claim status as 276 and 277. Waystar sits between MEDITECH and more than 5,000 payer connections, scrubs claims against a library it says holds 2.5 million continuously updated edits, routes them, and returns responses. Where the interface is configured, remits and status post back into MEDITECH; where it is not, staff work Waystar's queues and key the result.
| Data flow | Direction | Mechanism | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | MEDITECH to Waystar to payer and back | 270/271 at registration or batch | Registration, interface analyst |
| Claim submission | MEDITECH to Waystar to payer | 837 with Waystar edits | Billing, interface analyst |
| Remittance | Payer to Waystar to MEDITECH | 835 auto posting | Cash posting |
| Denial work | Waystar queues, updates to MEDITECH | Waystar platform, manual or interfaced | Denials team |
| Prior authorization | Waystar to payer portals | Waystar automation; results keyed or interfaced | Authorisation team |
The last column is the point. Every row has an owner, and at a hospital on MEDITECH as a Service some of those interfaces are MEDITECH's to change, through MEDITECH's queue. Newer MEDITECH FHIR APIs through Greenfield are read only and patient facing and play no part in this flow. Ask Waystar which rows are live at a MEDITECH reference site of your size, not which rows exist.
What does Waystar actually do for a MEDITECH revenue cycle team?
Cleans and routes claims, automates front end eligibility, posts remits and prioritises denials. Waystar publishes a 98.5 percent or better average clean claim rate, a 4 to 1 return for revenue capture users, and 96 percent on time implementations on its MEDITECH page. Those are vendor figures; the way to test them is against your own baseline.
The pieces map onto revenue cycle automation and denial management directly. The newer piece is prior authorization: Waystar's automation checks whether an authorisation is required, submits through payer portals and tracks status. On MEDITECH the trigger is a scheduled procedure or an order, and how that trigger reaches Waystar, interfaced or worked from a list, decides how automated it is. The prior authorization automation page sets out what to measure and the prior auth cost calculator shows what the manual process costs today.
Clinical integrity checks, DRG anomaly detection and charge integrity monitoring, are the items that reach beyond billing into coding. They influence what is claimed, so they belong in your compliance officer's remit as well as your revenue cycle director's.
What does your IT, finance and compliance team have to approve?
- Interface changes. New or modified 837, 835, 270/271 or HL7 feeds are interface analyst work. On MEDITECH as a Service, the request goes to MEDITECH.
- Payer re-enrolment. Moving clearinghouses means re-enrolling with payers for electronic remits and eligibility. This is calendar time and it is the step that slips.
- The business associate agreement. Waystar signs one. Settle retention, subprocessors and how AI features use your data; the HIPAA and AI compliance page lists what to insist on.
- Governance for automated actions. An appeal or an authorisation request generated by AI is an action with a payer. Agree what is auto submitted and what a person reviews. The CMS prior authorization rule is changing payer behaviour on the other side of that transaction through 2027.
A community hospital's constraint is people. Run these in parallel with named owners, and if you have no interface analyst, MEDITECH's Alliance includes consulting firms who do this work. A deployment roadmap is how you keep enrolment and interface work from serialising.
What are the known gaps and things Waystar does not publish?
Not published, checked September 2026:
- A transaction level statement of what posts back into MEDITECH automatically versus what is worked in Waystar queues.
- Whether the integration differs between Expanse and legacy MEDITECH platforms.
- Which AI features are live on MEDITECH sites specifically, and whether prior authorization automation is interfaced to MEDITECH orders.
- Pricing. Waystar prices on request against claim or transaction volume; the Waystar pricing page records what is public.
On the competitive side, MEDITECH has its own revenue cycle functionality within Expanse and other Alliance members, including FinThrive, Quadax and SSI, sell into the same space. Availity connects to MEDITECH sites as a clearinghouse and payer network without Alliance status. The right answer depends on your payer mix, denial profile and interface capacity, not on the partnership announcement.
What should you ask Waystar before signing?
- For each transaction in the table above, is it interfaced, batch or manual at a MEDITECH reference site of our size and hosting model?
- Which interfaces need to change on our instance, and who makes the change?
- How long does payer re-enrolment take for our top twenty payers, and who does it?
- Which AI features are live on MEDITECH customers today, and how are automated submissions reviewed?
- What is the price per claim or transaction, the minimum, and the term?
- What does the exit look like: how do we get claim history and remits out, and in what format?
Our EHR integration questions for AI agents covers the general list; the revenue cycle items are the ones above.
What does an independent review add?
A baseline that is yours and a comparison that is not run by a clearinghouse.
Waystar is a strong default on MEDITECH, and defaults are where money leaks. Start with the denial rate benchmark and the days in AR benchmark to see where you stand, read the prior authorization software comparison for the authorisation piece, and use our vendor selection service if you want the evaluation run on your numbers with no vendor commission.
If you have a renewal date, book a call before it and we will tell you what to negotiate.

Questions we get asked
Does Waystar work with MEDITECH Expanse?
Yes. Waystar and MEDITECH announced a partnership in January 2024 pairing Waystar with the Expanse EHR, and Waystar is on the MEDITECH Alliance member roster. Waystar's integration page does not name Expanse specifically, so ask whether anything differs between Expanse and legacy platforms at your site.
Is Waystar a MEDITECH Alliance partner?
Yes. Waystar appears on the MEDITECH Alliance member roster, checked in September 2026, and describes itself as an Alliance partner on its MEDITECH page. On MEDITECH that status maps to a working relationship with MEDITECH's teams, which is more than a marketplace listing means elsewhere.
Does Waystar post remits back into MEDITECH automatically?
Where the 835 interface is configured, yes. Whether it is configured at your site, and whether denial and status updates also post back, depends on the interfaces built. Ask for a transaction by transaction answer at a reference site like yours.
Can Waystar automate prior authorization on MEDITECH?
Waystar sells authorisation automation that checks requirements, submits through payer portals and tracks status. On MEDITECH the question is how the trigger reaches Waystar: interfaced from scheduling and orders, or worked from a list. The prior authorization automation page sets out what to test.
How much does Waystar cost for a MEDITECH hospital?
Not published. Waystar prices on request against claim or transaction volume, and the tier structure matters as much as the headline rate. Ask about minimums, term and what happens as volume grows. The Waystar pricing page records what is public and what to ask for.
Should a MEDITECH hospital use Waystar or Availity?
They overlap on clearinghouse and eligibility and differ on denial tooling, Alliance status and price model. Availity's free portal tier suits a small practice; Waystar's platform suits a hospital that wants denial work automated. Compare on your payer mix and denial profile. Our vendor selection work runs that comparison, and the Availity and MEDITECH page covers the other side.
