Does Abridge Work With Epic?

The connection uses Epic's ambient documentation framework rather than a bolt-on. The clinician starts a recording from the encounter in Haiku or Canto, the audio is processed by Abridge, and a draft note is returned into the encounter in Hyperdrive, where the clinician edits and signs it in the usual place. Patient and encounter context comes from Epic, so there is no separate patient selection step and no risk of a note being generated against the wrong chart because someone typed a name into a second app.

Underneath that experience are the standard Epic building blocks: Epic's ambient security points, SmartSection based note templates, the Showroom and Toolbox programme for the vendor side, and Epic on FHIR for patient context. Abridge's "Linked Evidence" feature, which maps each sentence of the draft back to the audio and transcript, is presented inside the same view. Two things are not published: the exact interface inventory Abridge installs at a site, and whether every Epic version in the field supports the full embedded workflow. Ask for the technical specification document your Epic analyst will receive, and ask which Hyperspace and Haiku versions the current build requires. Microsoft publishes version floors for its own Epic ambient product; Abridge's are shared during scoping.

The core loop is recording, drafting and signing without leaving Epic. Beyond that, as listed on the vendor's site in September 2026, Abridge Inside covers 50 or more specialties and 15 or more languages, and the note structure follows the templates your organisation has configured. The emergency medicine build adds ED specific note types, and the orders build proposes inpatient and outpatient orders drawn from the conversation for the clinician to accept or reject.

Those later features change the risk profile. A draft note that a clinician reads and corrects is a low consequence failure mode. A proposed order is not, even with a human accepting it, because acceptance fatigue is real and well documented in decision support literature. More than a vendor demo suggests. Even for a Workshop product, the following sit with your organisation:

• Security review and the business associate agreement, run in parallel with the technical work rather than after it. The HIPAA and AI page lists the retention and model training questions to settle first.
• Epic ambient security points for each user class, and the user allowlist for shared encounters.
• Note template mapping. Abridge writes into your templates, so someone must decide which SmartSections receive generated text and which stay manual.
• Mobile device management for Haiku and Canto, including microphone permissions on personally owned phones.
• A change control slot and a test plan, with named clinicians for validation.

The usual point of slippage is the queue of other Epic requests ahead of this one. Ask your Epic lead how long that queue is before you agree a go live date with the medical staff. We scope this in an AI readiness audit because the answer often changes which vendor fits.

The most common complaint we hear about Abridge is not about the integration but about price and contract shape. Abridge sells to health systems on negotiated enterprise terms and does not publish a rate card, so smaller Epic groups on a hosted instance can find the minimum commitment out of reach. The second is dependency on Epic's ambient framework itself. Because the experience is delivered through Epic's own module, feature timing can be gated by your Epic upgrade schedule rather than by Abridge. A site two versions behind may not get the emergency medicine or orders features until it upgrades. That is a reasonable trade for a stable embedded product, but it should be in the plan.

Third, the market has moved. Microsoft Dragon Copilot is also embedded in Haiku and Hyperdrive, and Ambience, Nabla and Suki are all in Epic's Toolbox for ambient voice recognition. • Which Hyperspace, Haiku and Canto versions does the current Epic build require, and which features are gated by version?
• Exactly what is written back, into which SmartSections, and can the orders and coding features be disabled at the user class level?
• Where is audio processed and stored, for how long, and is any of it used to train shared models? Get the answer in the BAA, not an email.
• What does the site level implementation plan look like, and how many Epic analyst hours does a comparable customer report?
• What are the minimum commitment, the per clinician price at your volume, and the exit terms if adoption stalls?
• Which reference customers run your Epic version, and can you speak to their CMIO without the vendor on the call?
