Is Ambience Healthcare Native in eClinicalWorks?

Ambience does not publish an interface level description for eClinicalWorks, so what follows is what the available paths are and what Ambience has said. eClinicalWorks exposes a certified FHIR R4 API with OAuth 2.0 and SMART on FHIR authorisation under its ONC certification, a developer programme it calls the Platform for Open Development, HL7 v2 interfaces for feeds and document write back, and a proprietary API used in some deployments. Ambience describes reading the chart before drafting and pushing note sections into the corresponding eCW fields, which implies write access at section level rather than a document drop, and that generally means the proprietary interface or a purpose built connection negotiated for an enterprise customer.

Ask which. The distinction matters because the FHIR path is the one eClinicalWorks is obliged to keep working under the certification programme, while a proprietary or bespoke connection depends on the commercial relationship between two companies, one of which sells a competing product.

The incumbent has a distribution advantage, a published price and control of the interfaces. Ambience's counter is depth in CDI and coding for risk bearing groups, specialty co development of the kind it did with Pediatric Associates, and a KLAS spotlight score of 97.7 percent that it publishes and KLAS produced.

It records the visit with consent, drafts a structured note grounded in the chart, surfaces point of care CDI prompts and ICD-10 and CPT suggestions during the visit, and pushes the note sections into the matching eCW progress note fields for the clinician to review and sign in eClinicalWorks. Ambience also generates patient facing after visit summaries. In the Pediatric Associates deployment the applications were co created for paediatrics, including well visit and specialty templates, which is the model Ambience uses for large groups.

What is not published for eClinicalWorks: whether assessments land as structured diagnoses in the eCW assessment section or as text, whether orders and follow ups are pended, and how the after visit summary reaches the patient through healow or otherwise. Ask to see the eCW encounter after a test push rather than the Ambience screen. The ambient scribe use case page lists the write back questions that separate scribe tiers.

On eClinicalWorks the practice authorises the application itself, per site, and that is the step small groups underestimate. You will register or accept Ambience's application against your eCW instance, raise any interface request with eClinicalWorks in writing and ask what it costs and how long it takes, sign a BAA directly with Ambience, decide which clinicians and specialties go first, and own the relationship when a write fails. Ambience's enterprise onboarding team will drive much of this, but somebody at the practice has to have authority to say yes.

The compliance approvals are separate and run on their own clock. The HIPAA and AI page sets out retention, subprocessor, model training and breach notification terms to insist on. Because Ambience produces coding suggestions that affect claims, your compliance officer should also own the review policy; the scribe compliance checklist puts the steps in order.

Ask eClinicalWorks directly how third party API access has behaved over the past year. A platform that competes with its own ecosystem is a risk you are taking on, and the vendor cannot absorb it for you.

• Enterprise oriented. The reference deployment is a multi state group. A ten clinician practice should ask what the minimum commitment is and who its support contact will be.

• Competing incumbent controls the platform. Sunoh.ai is eClinicalWorks' own product. Ask for the contractual position if eCW changes API terms.
• Structured diagnoses and orders not documented for eCW. Inspect a test encounter.

Ask Ambience, in writing: which eClinicalWorks interfaces the integration uses and whether they are certified FHIR, proprietary API or bespoke; which chart data is read before drafting; which sections are written and what happens when they already contain text; whether diagnoses and orders land as structured entries; how a failed write is surfaced; where audio and transcripts are stored and for how long; whether your data trains shared models; the minimum contract size for your practice; and the offboarding process. Ask eClinicalWorks: what it charges for the interface Ambience needs, how long activation takes, and whether anything in your eCW agreement constrains third party scribes.
