Does Suki Work With athenahealth?

On the athenahealth Marketplace programme, which is both the catalogue and the gate. A partner applies, passes a technical review of API usage and data handling, passes a security review, and then publishes a listing. Suki has been through that process for Suki for Clinicians, and the embedded Ambient Notes route sits under athenahealth's own product rather than a separate listing.

Technically, athenaOne exposes a FHIR R4 API with OAuth 2.0 alongside its older proprietary athenaOne APIs. Ambient vendors generally use both: FHIR for the standard clinical read, the proprietary interfaces for encounter and schedule specifics. Suki does not publish a field level description of which interfaces it calls on athenaOne, so ask for it. The answer determines whether the note starts with the patient's problem list and medications in front of it, or starts blank.

The incumbent question is unusual here because athenahealth does not build its own model. Ambient Notes is the incumbent, and Suki is one of the engines inside it. If you buy through athenahealth you are buying Suki's output on athenahealth's terms; if you buy Suki for Clinicians you get Suki's roadmap, including dictation and voice commands, on Suki's terms.

It listens to the encounter with consent, drafts a note in the practice's preferred structure, and places that draft into the athenaOne encounter for the clinician to review and sign. The signing stays in athenaOne; Suki does not finalise anything on its own. In the Ambient Notes route the clinician activates recording from the encounter and the draft appears in the note within athenaOne. In the Suki for Clinicians route the clinician works in the Suki app and the finished note is sent to the matching athenaOne encounter.

Beyond the note, Suki for Clinicians offers dictation, voice commands and coding suggestions, and Suki reported an average of 1,688 US dollars in incremental monthly revenue per user from its athenahealth customers in the January 2026 release. That is a vendor figure drawn from its own customers; use the ROI calculator with your own visit mix rather than budgeting from it.

What we could not confirm from public material in September 2026: whether Suki writes discrete diagnoses onto athenaOne diagnosis cards or only into the assessment text, and whether orders are pended. Both are worth asking, because they separate a scribe that saves typing from one that saves the clicks that come after the typing. Less than on Epic, but the steps still exist. For the Ambient Notes route, the commercial step is an addition to your athenahealth agreement and the technical step is enabling the feature for named clinicians. athenahealth has already accepted Suki as a subprocessor for that arrangement, which is the main reason the route is fast.

For Suki for Clinicians, you authorise the Marketplace app against your practice data, sign a business associate agreement directly with Suki, and decide which users get licences. The Marketplace review covers Suki's API usage and security controls at the time of review. It does not cover retention periods, whether your audio trains shared models, or the subprocessor list, all of which are contract terms. Assign one owner. Even on a curated platform, someone has to make decisions about data, answer Suki's onboarding questions and decide when the pilot ends. Practices that skip this do not fail, they drift.

• Two products, one brand. Suki for Partners inside Ambient Notes and Suki for Clinicians on the Marketplace differ in features, support path and price. Vendors and resellers use the word Suki for both. Make the quote name which one.
• Pricing is not published. Suki's registry entry on this site records per clinician subscription pricing on request; the Ambient Notes price is athenahealth's, not Suki's. See the Suki pricing page for what has been disclosed.
• Chart read depth is undocumented publicly. Whether the draft is grounded in the existing problem list and medication list, or only in the audio, has not been published. Not published. Checked September 2026. Ask for a written description.
• Preferred partner status is commercial. It says who athenahealth will put in front of you first and can be changed by athenahealth. Ask what happens to your contract and your clinicians if the embedded set changes.
• Specialty coverage varies. Suki's athenahealth adoption is concentrated in primary care and ambulatory specialties. Test against ten real encounters in your own specialty before deciding.

Ask athenahealth first, because it holds the contract if you go the Ambient Notes route. Which models are included today, what the per clinician price is, whether clinicians can switch between models mid contract, and what the renewal terms are if a model is removed. Then ask whether the Ambient Notes route or Suki for Clinicians is the one athenahealth would recommend for your specialty and why.

Ask Suki, in writing: which athenaOne interfaces the integration calls and with which scopes; whether the note reads the chart before drafting; whether diagnoses land as structured entries; how a failed write is surfaced; where audio and transcripts are stored and for how long; whether your data trains models shared across customers; and what the offboarding process returns to you. Then run the test that matters: two Ambient Notes models against the same real encounters, in your specialty, with a date on which you will decide. The differences between the models are larger than the marketing suggests, and the scribe comparison sets out where they tend to diverge.
