Can DeepScribe Be Used With NextGen?
Last updated / Reviewed by Clunic Research Team
Quick answer
Yes, on DeepScribe's account. DeepScribe publishes that its NextGen integration reads chart context before the visit, syncs the NextGen schedule and writes structured data back into discrete NextGen fields. As of September 2026 DeepScribe does not appear on the NextGen API Marketplace and its own integrations page names only Epic and two oncology systems, so treat the NextGen depth as vendor stated until you see it on your build.

Book an evaluation callCan DeepScribe be used with NextGen?
Yes according to DeepScribe, with a caveat about evidence. DeepScribe's own resource on NextGen, published for 2026, describes a bi-directional integration: it "reads patient chart context before the encounter", including active problems, medications, labs and prior documentation, "syncs with the NextGen schedule so clinicians can work from their patient queue directly within DeepScribe", and "writes structured data back into discrete NextGen fields after the visit". That is a full description of what a good scribe integration does.
What we could not find is corroboration outside DeepScribe's marketing. DeepScribe does not appear in the NextGen API Marketplace list we checked in September 2026. DeepScribe's own EHR integrations page names Epic, iKnowMed Generation 2 and OncoEMR, and does not mention NextGen. The NextGen resource names no NextGen customer. None of that means the integration does not work; DeepScribe's oncology focus explains the integrations page, and plenty of real integrations are never listed on a marketplace. It does mean the depth recorded here is API, vendor stated, and the burden sits with DeepScribe to demonstrate it on your NextGen build.
Context matters for the shortlist. NextGen sells its own scribe, NextGen Ambient Assist, powered by Nabla, and the NextGen integration guide explains why any third party scribe on NextGen is competing with the bundle. DeepScribe's pitch is specialty depth in orthopaedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology, neurology and nephrology, which happen to be NextGen's core markets. If your group is in one of those, the comparison is worth running properly.
How is the DeepScribe and NextGen integration built?
DeepScribe does not say, beyond the outcomes, so this section is about what the options are and what to ask.
NextGen publishes an API Developer Program with three tracks. Patient Access APIs are free and cover patient facing data. The Open Access track is for a NextGen client building for its own use, with no fee stated. The API Distributor Program is the commercial track, with sandboxes and language that fees "may have associated fees based on the scope of data needs and/or other requirements". A scribe that reads problems, medications and labs and writes notes back needs broad scope, so it belongs on the Distributor track. Vendors on that track are generally listed on the marketplace; DeepScribe is not, which is the first question to put to them: which track, since when, and is a NextGen fee in our quote?
The second architectural question is standards. NextGen documents FHIR R4 and SMART App Launch for certified access, and its proprietary enterprise APIs for deeper operations. Reading chart context is plausible over FHIR. Writing a note into discrete NextGen template fields usually is not, and would rely on the proprietary APIs or on an HL7 v2 document interface through NextGen Connect, the engine formerly called Mirth. Ask which. If the answer involves NextGen Connect, somebody in your organisation owns that interface, and you should know who before you sign.
The third is the client. DeepScribe captures on a mobile app and the clinician reviews in DeepScribe's own interface; the NextGen schedule sync exists so the clinician does not have to retype the patient. That is not a SMART launch inside the NextGen chart. It works, and it is a second application on the clinician's phone. Our EHR integration questions post sets out the full list in the order to ask them.
What does DeepScribe actually do inside NextGen?
Per DeepScribe, three things. Before the visit, it pulls the schedule and chart context so the note reflects known problems and medications rather than only what was said. During the visit, it records ambiently on the clinician's device. After the visit, it produces a specialty specific note and writes structured elements into NextGen fields rather than pasting a single block of text.
The specialty claim is the substantive one. DeepScribe states its models are trained on specialty encounters in the six specialties named above and that its integration and specialty coverage align with NextGen's customer base. That is a testable claim: ask for a sample note in your specialty produced from a NextGen practice, and pilot with your most complex visit types rather than your simplest.
Two numbers appear in DeepScribe's material and need handling. A KLAS Spotlight score of 98.8 out of 100 is a real third party measure, but a Spotlight report is commissioned and based on a vendor supplied customer list; read the report's sample size before quoting the score to your board. Any time saving figure should be measured against your own baseline. The ROI calculator exposes its assumptions for exactly that purpose. What the write back looks like field by field is not published. Not published. Checked September 2026. Get the field map in writing and see it on your own NextGen templates.
What does your IT and compliance team have to approve?
- Business associate agreement with DeepScribe, covering audio and transcript storage location, retention, whether your data trains shared models, and subprocessors.
- NextGen access. Which developer track, which APIs, which scopes, and whether a NextGen fee applies. If an HL7 interface is involved, who builds and maintains it.
- Write back safety. Whether notes land as drafts or signed, whether discrete data such as problems or medications is written automatically or only on clinician acceptance, and what the audit trail shows.
- Device policy. Capture is on a phone; your mobile device management, screen lock and lost device procedures now cover recorded encounters.
- Coding. If the note suggests diagnosis or procedure codes, your compliance officer needs a documented review step. This is the same point we make about NextGen's own Ambient Assist, which NextGen says supports diagnostic and order codes.
- Marketplace status. Because there is no NextGen validated listing, document your own validation: what you tested, on which NextGen version, with what result.

What are the known gaps and open questions?
Evidence is the first gap. A vendor blog post is the only public source for the NextGen integration as of September 2026. Ask for two NextGen Enterprise practices in your specialty, live for more than six months, and call them about write back reliability rather than note quality.
NextGen Office is the second. Nothing DeepScribe publishes distinguishes NextGen Enterprise from NextGen Office, and the two have different API surfaces. If you run Office, ask directly.
Pricing is the third. DeepScribe quotes on request. Not published. Checked September 2026. Ask for per clinician pricing, minimum term, implementation fees and whether any NextGen API charge is passed through. DeepScribe pricing covers what can be established in advance.
The fourth is the bundle. NextGen Ambient Assist is already integrated, already supported by your EHR vendor and already on the NextGen Mobile app your clinicians carry. DeepScribe has to be measurably better in your specialty to justify a second vendor, a second BAA and a second application. That is a fair test and DeepScribe may pass it; run it rather than assuming either way. The scribe comparison sets out how the vendors line up on integration evidence.
What should you ask before you sign?
- Which NextGen developer track is DeepScribe on, since when, and does a NextGen fee apply to us?
- Which NextGen product and version is the integration live on, Enterprise or Office?
- Which NextGen template sections and discrete fields does the note populate, and is it draft or signed?
- Does any part of the integration depend on an HL7 interface through NextGen Connect, and who maintains it?
- Show us the schedule sync and the write back on our own NextGen build, in our specialty templates.
- What is the sample size behind the KLAS Spotlight score?
- Which two NextGen practices in our specialty can we call?
- Per clinician price, minimum term, implementation fee and renewal cap?

What does an independent review add?
This pairing is a judgement call with incomplete public evidence. DeepScribe describes a deep integration and has real specialty strength; NextGen has a bundled alternative with no integration risk at all; and the only way to resolve it is to test both on your encounters and check DeepScribe's NextGen claims against a working build and live references. Neither vendor will do that for you.
Our vendor selection engagement runs the head to head, verifies the developer track, field map and references in writing, and gives your group a documented decision. Questions we get asked
Does DeepScribe integrate with NextGen?
DeepScribe says yes, describing schedule sync, pre visit chart context and write back into discrete NextGen fields. As of September 2026 that is vendor stated: DeepScribe is not on the NextGen API Marketplace and its own integrations page does not list NextGen. Ask to see it on your build and for NextGen references.
How does DeepScribe compare with NextGen Ambient Assist?
Ambient Assist is NextGen's own scribe, powered by Nabla, delivered through NextGen Mobile with no third party integration to manage. DeepScribe's case is specialty depth in orthopaedics, cardiology, GI, urology, neurology and nephrology. Run both on your encounters for thirty days and compare note quality, edit time and write back reliability. See Nabla and NextGen for the bundled route.
Is DeepScribe on the NextGen API Marketplace?
Not in the marketplace list we checked in September 2026. That does not prove the integration does not exist, but it does mean there is no NextGen validated listing behind it, so your own validation and reference calls carry the weight.
Does DeepScribe write notes back into NextGen?
DeepScribe states that it writes structured data into discrete NextGen fields after the visit. The field map, draft versus signed behaviour and NextGen Enterprise versus Office coverage are not published. Get them in writing and demonstrated on your templates.
How much does DeepScribe cost on NextGen?
DeepScribe prices on request. Ask for per clinician pricing, minimum term, implementation fees and whether any NextGen API charge is included. DeepScribe pricing explains how to compare the quote with NextGen's bundled Ambient Assist.
Which specialties is DeepScribe strongest in on NextGen?
DeepScribe names orthopaedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology, neurology and nephrology, and points out these overlap with NextGen's customer base. Ask for a sample note in your specialty from a NextGen practice, and pilot on your most complex visit types. The scribe comparison covers specialty coverage across vendors.
